Finals, Championships and Bed Bugs

It’s that time of year again. Finals. Despite the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas break being few in number, they are perhaps the most stressful weeks of a college student’s semester. But this year, some unknown force decided to make these few weeks even more unbearable by giving me the gift that keeps on giving (or rather, biting).

Yup. My apartment is infested with bed bugs. Or was. As I’m writing this post, the exterminator has already fumigated our apartment and hopefully killed them all. But I’m still itching. If you have never had bed bugs before, pray to goodness that you never do.

For the record, you don’t get bed bugs because you’re dirty or gross or anything like that. It can pretty much happen to anyone. My apartment is very old and lacks good insulation, so I blame that for our misfortune. After discovering the little buggers (in my bed nonetheless) and freaking out, we were forced to pack up literally EVERYTHING in our apartment and seal stuff in plastic bags. We also had to make a trip to the laundromat with all of our clothes so we could put them in the dryer for 40 minutes. Now, this might not seem too horrible a task, but I have a ton of clothes, so it took forever.

You would think that after the exterminator came, we would be in the clear. But no. We have to keep everything bagged up for 7-10 days after the treatment, just incase the bed bugs weren’t all killed the first time around. And apparently…it’s common for it to take more than one treatment. So there is a possibility I could be hauling all my stuff to the laundromat again. Curse you bug gods.

On a positive note, my roommates and I were able to escape our invested abode for a rendezvous in Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship this past weekend. I don’t know if any of you really follow Badger football as closely as I do, but the last time we played Nebraska, it was not pretty. So you can imagine my surprise when we absolutely creamed them. I have to say, I was impressed.

That was my last time watching the Badgers play as a student since I, unfortuntately, will not be attending the Rose Bowl. The end of football season has brought on a case of melancholy regarding my graduation in 5 months. During the last game at Camp Randall, my heart literally hurt. I never truly realized how much I enjoyed getting up on Saturday (sometimes super early), walking to the stadium, drinking Spotted Cow (yum) and cheering on the Badgers.

Bed bugs aside, these last few weeks of school actually shouldn’t be too bad for me. The thing I love about being a journalism & strat comm major is that your finals usually consist of completing the projects you’ve been working on all semester. There is nothing better than seeing your finished product and having proof that you actually accomplished something (way more significant than an A on an exam if you ask me). I’ve been fortunate enough to have great classes this semester and I feel like next semester will follow suit.

Stay tuned for a wrap up post about the semester! And a possible job search update.
